From the Top Launches National Initiative • March 2023
What does disability joy look like? We’ve been working with From the Top, America’s favorite talent-spotting classical radio show, to explore that idea this spring.
The Scene: Julia LaGrand, an 18-year-old blind violinist, approached From the Top with a bold vision to raise awareness – and expectations – for young disabled and neurodivergent musicians.
The Project: That advocacy sparked a national performance special, two panels co-presented with the Kennedy Center, featured spots on the Daily Joy social video series, and ongoing educational opportunities for the four performers featured in the national special.
The Focus: Centering the voices of disabled/neurodivergent artists, avoiding any hint of “inspiration porn”, featuring these young musicians in age-appropriate ways.
The Results: We’re proud to have helped bring these powerful stories to broader audiences, including print features in the Boston Globe and Houston Chronicle and radio promos nationwide.
